This policy applies to students enrolled in programs that use edTPA as part of their certification/licensure process.
During the official scoring process conducted by Pearson, selected portions of a teacher candidate’s edTPA submission are reviewed for originality using both scorer review and plagiarism-detection software. A portfolio may be placed into Administrative Review if this screening identifies identical or closely similar language to other sources, including previously submitted portfolios. If reviewers are unable to verify the originality of any portion of the submission, all scores associated with the portfolio will be nullified, and the candidate will not be eligible for a refund of assessment fees.
Before scores are voided, candidates are given an opportunity to submit supporting documentation—separate from the portfolio materials used for scoring—that may demonstrate the originality of their work. After reviewing the candidate’s submitted information and considering the final recommendation of the Administrative Review Committee, Pearson or the relevant state authority will determine whether the portfolio should be released from Administrative Review and scored, or whether all associated scores should be voided.
Any information submitted by a candidate during the appeal process may be shared with the state licensing agency and/or the Educator Preparation Program (Relay) for further review or investigation.
If the Administrative Review process results in a final decision to void edTPA scores, notification of the score void will be sent via email to the candidate, the state agency, and Relay. Depending on state policy, the materials flagged during the review and the corresponding source materials may also be shared with the appropriate state agency. For more information concerning the specific aspects of the edTPA originality policy, kindly review the edTPA webpage titled Candidate Policies.
If a Relay student’s edTPA scores are voided due to originality, the student will be required to meet with their Manager of Student Success (MOSS) to confirm or contest within 15 business days of receiving notification of the score void from Pearson. Their MOSS will take their case to the Director of Licensure and Certification Exam Preparation. The Director of Licensure and Certification Exam Preparation will make the final decision regarding whether a case warrants the application of the terms outlined in Relay’s Academic Honesty and Collaboration Policy.
