The New York Transitional B Alternative Teacher Preparation Program is intended for students who have completed an undergraduate degree and want to seek teacher certification in New York while teaching in a New York school. 

 

The New York Transitional B Alternative Teacher Preparation Program is offered through enrollment in a corresponding Master of Arts in Teaching program:

  • Single endorsements in early childhood, childhood, middle childhood, or adolescent general education are offered through enrollment in a corresponding MAT program (32 credits/6 terms). 

  • Students seeking the Students with Disabilities (Grades 1-6) certificate or the Students with Disabilities (Grades 7-12) Generalist certificate must enroll in the MAT in Special Education (39 credits/6 terms). 

  • Students seeking the Students with Disabilities (Birth-Grade 2) must enroll in the MAT in Early Childhood Special Education.

 

Students complete aligned coursework and qualifying clinical experience through teaching for at least one (1) academic year as a teacher of record in a New York school while holding an issued Transitional B certificate. Students’ teaching assignments must match their certificate title. Qualifying clinical experience typically occurs during the second year of enrollment. Clinical experiences are supervised by Relay faculty and a school-based clinical mentor. Academic plans detailing specific course requirements may be accessed on the Academic Plans site. Students are provided with a detailed course schedule at orientation.

 

Successful program completers who meet all necessary requirements for certification may apply for the New York Initial Certificate. New York Residency Teacher Preparation Program

Single Endorsements: Childhood Education (Grades 1-6)

 

The New York Residency Teacher Preparation Program is intended for students who have completed an undergraduate degree and want to seek teacher certification in New York while teaching in a New York school. It is intended for students who have completed an undergraduate degree and want to seek teacher certification in New York while employed by a New York school. 

 

The New York Residency Teacher Preparation Program is offered through enrollment in a corresponding Master of Arts in Teaching program:

  • Single endorsement in childhood is offered through enrollment in a corresponding MAT program (30 credits/4 terms). 

 

Students complete aligned coursework and qualifying clinical experience through teaching for at least one (1) academic year as a teacher resident in a New York school while holding an issued Residency certificate. Students’ teaching assignments must match their certificate title. Clinical experiences are supervised by Relay faculty and a school-based clinical mentor. Successful program completers who meet all necessary requirements for certification may apply for the New York Initial Certificate. New York Additional Certification Program

Additional Endorsements: Students with Disabilities (Grades 1-6); Students with Disabilities (Grades 7-12) Generalist

 

Subject Area Extensions for Students with Disabilities (Grades 7-12) Generalist: Students with Disabilities - Mathematics (Grades 7-12); Students with Disabilities - English Language Arts (Grades 7-12); Students with Disabilities - Biology (Grades 7-12); Students with Disabilities - Chemistry (Grades 7-12); Students with Disabilities - Earth Science (Grades 7-12); Students with Disabilities - Physics (Grades 7-12); Students with Disabilities - Social Studies (Grades 7-12); Students with Disabilities - French (Grades 7-12); Students with Disabilities - Italian (Grades 7-12); Students with Disabilities - Spanish (Grades 7-12)

 

The New York Additional Certification Program is intended for educators who hold at least a bachelor’s degree and have completed a registered New York state teacher preparation program and hold an Initial and/or Professional Certificate and who wish to add Teacher of Students with Disabilities endorsement. 

 

The New York Additional Certificate program is offered through the Advanced Certificate in Special Education (21 credit/3 terms). 

 

Successful program completers who meet all necessary requirements for certification will be eligible for an additional certificate in Students with Disabilities (Grades 1-6) or Students with Disabilities (Grades 7-12) Generalist. *Eligible students seeking the Students with Disabilities (Grades 7-12) Generalist certificate may add one or more subject area extensions to their certificate.
