As a student in Relay’s Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program, we understand that your career goals may evolve over time. That is why we offer the flexibility to change your teaching certification-seeking status. Here’s what you need to know:

1. Why Change Your Certification-Seeking Status

While Relay seeks to provide comprehensive education, preparing you to become a skilled educator, we recognize that not all students may wish to pursue state-specific certification immediately. You have the choice to begin or pause the process of seeking certification through Relay (pending eligibility).

2. Advising Support: Meet With Your Advisor

Before submitting your request, we encourage you to meet with your dedicated academic advisor. They will help you discuss your options and ultimately make an informed decision based on your career aspirations. Your advisor will help determine the right subject/content area for your certification and discuss any possible changes to your course schedule.

3. How To Request a Change

To explore the available options and learn how to request a change in your certification-seeking status, watch the short video below. It will explain the process of completing a request to change your certification-seeking status.

To submit a request, please use the Area of Study (AOS) Change Form in the Student Support tab of your status page.

Please note that depending on your specific program and corresponding state requirements, you may be required to complete a transfer application in addition to this form. We will contact you with details and instructions if this applies to you.

4. Ongoing Support

If you have any questions about submitting your request, about the time it will take to process your request, or any other questions, please feel free to reach out to your academic advisor or the registrar’s office through [email protected]

How do I add a Subject-Area Extension to my 7-12 Students with Disabilities - Generalist Trans-B Program and Certification Area

1. Why add a subject-area extension to my 7-12 Students with Disabilities - Generalist Trans-B program?

Teacher candidates in the Students with Disabilities (Grades 7-12) Generalist program may pursue a subject-area extension while enrolled or upon program completion. A subject-area extension is required for special education teachers who teach one or more subject areas in a special class in grades 7-12, with some or no students under alternate assessment. To obtain the subject-area extension on a Transitional B certificate, a candidate must demonstrate successful completion of 12 credits in a content area (biology, chemistry, earth science, ELA, general science, languages other than English, mathematics, physics, and social studies) before admission to Relay.  A subject-area extension may be added after admission to Relay.

The subject area extension annotation requires 12 credits in a content area (biology, chemistry, earth science, ELA, general science, languages other than English, mathematics, physics, and social studies). Cognate credits are not accepted.

2. Advising Support

If you are interested in adding a subject-area extension, schedule an appointment with the Relay New York certification team to determine and discuss:

  • Whether your current teaching context and setting require a subject-area extension

  • Whether you are eligible for a subject-area extension

  • How to request a subject area extension if you are eligible

  • If any approval is required from your Prep Program [ex: TFA, NYCTF, EdPrep] (if applicable)

3. How to request a subject-area extension

Before your office hours appointment, submit a request.  Please use the Area of Study (AOS) Change Form in the Student Support tab of your status page.

When you reach the items in the screenshot below, make your selections to match the screenshot.
