Students who fail a course (i.e., receive either an “F” grade or “Fail” grade) are required to complete their program in a future term and must retake the course during a future term when the course is offered. Students who retake courses are not always guaranteed to complete the program on time and will have to pay for repeat courses (see Tuition and Fees for more information). Options for retaking a failed course may include taking the course online, if available, or taking the course with a future cohort. In order to continue eligibility for receiving federal financial aid, where available, students must be on track to graduate within 150% of the normal time frame for the program (e.g., within three years for a two-year program). All attempts of retaking a course will remain on the student’s academic record. All earned grades will be included in the student's weighted cumulative GPA with the exception of retaking a failed course.

Students who receive an “F” grade in Relay courses will have the option to retake failed courses for a passing grade. Students must discuss the option to retake a failed course with their advisor and get their approval in order to register to retake a course. Effective Summer 2021 and beyond, once students retake the course and receive a final grade, students' initial “F” grade will convert to a “Fail” grade, which is not calculated into their cumulative grade point average. The initial “F” will no longer factor into their GPA and will appear on students’ transcripts with 0 earned credits. The new grade that students earn on the retake will be included in the calculation of the cumulative grade point average and counted toward the appropriate GPA and academic progress (for financial aid).

If students retake and fail the course a second time, only the most recent “F” grade will be calculated toward students’ cumulative grade point average. Please keep in mind that retaking coursework may impact licensure, financial aid eligibility, and program completion timeline.

Further policy clarification:

1. Courses that are “Pass/Fail” by design are not affected by this policy as “Pass/Fail” grades do not calculate into students’ cumulative GPA. As a result, “Pass/Fail” grades can be retaken and their cumulative GPA will not be affected.
2. If students retake a course in which they earned an “F” and withdraws (“W”), the original “F” grade remains for grade point average calculations toward credits attempted and credits earned.
